The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park Mausoleum, also known as KNMP, is situated off the Professor Atta Mills High Street, adjacent to the Accra Arts Centre. This remarkable memorial park is dedicated to celebrating the life and accomplishments of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who is also referred to as Osagyefo.
The Significance of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is of immense importance as it highlights the history of Ghana through the lens of the man who led the struggle. The bronze statue of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, positioned in the park, gazes towards the future while pointing ahead. It stands exactly where he delivered his historic speech in 1957, proclaiming Ghana’s independence from British rule, with the iconic phrase, “Forward ever, backward never.”
Upon entering the park, you will be greeted by seven bare-chested male statues, each holding a flute that emits streams of water. In Ghanaian culture, flutes and their melodies are used to welcome distinguished guests and dignitaries.
The Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum comprises two main attractions: the museum and the mausoleum itself. The mausoleum serves as the final resting place of Kwame Nkrumah and is situated on a man-made island, connected to the mainland by two bridges.
